Creosote Treatment
Creosote is a byproduct of burning wood, it lines your chimney and must be cleaned annually. If not cleaned annually, it can create buildup within the system, moisture retention and increase the chances of a chimney fire. This buildup comes in 4 stages:
- 1st degree creosote is sooty and ash-like and can be swept off with a basic chimney brush.
- 2nd degree creosote is a dry, flaky tar deposit, and is more flammable than 1st degree creosote. It is usually able to be swept off with a basic chimney brush.
- 3rd degree creosote is a very thick layer, very shiny and tar-like, and can result in house fires due to being extremely flammable. A creosote treatment is needed to remove it and may need to be repeated more than once at this stage.
- 4th degree creosote is sticky, tacky or runny due to a high concentration of water vapor when the creosote is forming. A creosote treatment is needed to remove it and may need to be repeated more than once at this stage.
