The smoke chamber is the area above the damper in your fireplace and is there to guide the smoke and fumes from the fire up to and out the flue. A correctly done smoke chamber should have an angle of 30-45 degrees and be smoothly coated with high-temperature cement or mortar that meets the requirements set by the NFPA.
